Funding & Governance

The activities of NCIRS are divided between two operating divisions – Policy & Surveillance and Clinical Research. The staff of these two divisions work independently of each other. The two divisions are funded separately as below.

Funding

Policy & Surveillance

Core funding for the research activities of the NCIRS Policy and Surveillance sections is provided by the Australian Government Department of Health and Ageing and the NSW Department of Health. The Children's Hospital at Westmead and the University of Sydney provide infrastructure support.

Core funders have the right of review of NCIRS publications, when applicable; however, NCIRS maintains editorial control over all web content, publications and print materials.

Additional funding for specific activities in this division is occasionally provided from various funding bodies, e.g. the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC). These bodies have no input into NCIRS publication content or editorial policies.

The Policy and Surveillance sections of NCIRS do not accept any funding from pharmaceutical companies or other for-profit industry sources. NCIRS has a policy governing the interactions of staff members with the pharmaceutical industry.

Clinical Research

The Clinical Research group within NCIRS undertakes a mix of investigator-driven and industry-sponsored research. Investigator-initiated research includes both competitive grant-funded studies and studies supported by vaccine manufacturers.

The source of funding for each clinical study conducted at NCIRS is listed in the Clinical Studies section of this website.

Governance

NCIRS operations and research activities are overseen by an Advisory Board and Scientific Advisory Committee.
